Switchbacks moving forward regardless of injuries or previous results in third tilt against rival New Mexico
A busy week could be a blessing in disguise for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.
Following a 2-0 home loss to Sacramento Republic FC on Sept. 20, the Switchbacks are back in action Wednesday night against visiting rival New Mexico United. Colorado Springs will then host Hartford Athletic on Saturday.
Wednesday’s match is a make-up game that was originally scheduled to be played in April but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The theme of the match for Colorado Springs (8-9-7) could be “forward,” as the club is pressing on regardless of last week’s result.
“We really did (train Monday and Tuesday) and we actually got after it. Just to carry on, pushing our bodies through it. I think we feel good for tomorrow and I think it helps there’s a short turnaround after a loss, you don’t have too much time to dwell on it,” Switchbacks midfielder and leading scorer Marco Micaletto said.
Colorado Springs will also have to move forward without some players. Switchbacks forwards Juan Tejada and Kyle Vassell left last week’s match early due to injuries. If either or both players miss time, they add to a list of notable players out of the Switchbacks including midfielders Anthony Fontana and Aidan Rocha, who have been dealing with long-term injuries.
Even so, Switchbacks coach James Chambers’ message regarding the lineup was clear.
“We’ll have a few that are out. Yeah, we’re pretty banged up but it is what it is, so no excuses we just move forward with who’s available,” Chambers said.
Those who suit up for Colorado Springs on Wednesday will try and earn the club’s first win over New Mexico since 2023 and the first in five matches. This year, New Mexico and Colorado Springs have faced off twice, once in regular-season play and again in the USL Jägermeister Cup. Both times, the clubs battled to a draw through 90 minutes of play. New Mexico earned an extra point toward group standings in the Jägermeister Cup by winning a penalty shootout.
But perhaps the Switchbacks can engineer a different outcome as Wednesday’s match marks the first time this season, New Mexico (10-10-4), plays at Weidner Field.
“It’s crazy because it’s two completely contrasting styles,” Micaletto said. “We like to be really aggressive off the ball and even on the ball, we want to go and score goals. They’re a little bit more intricate and yeah, all our games end up being good battles between two good teams and we just want to be the one that comes out on top tomorrow.”
Colorado Springs sits in the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL Championship’s Western Conference while New Mexico is in fifth.
Micaletto’s six scores pace Colorado Springs. Forward Jonas Fjeldberg leads the Switchbacks in assists while on the New Mexico side, forward Greg Hurst leads the club in goals with five and forward Mukwelle Akale leads in assists, also with five.
