Colorado Springs weather: Nearly a foot of snow hits some areas of state

Southern Colorado was “significantly” cooler on Tuesday as winds picked up with chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Periods of rain occurred locally in the afternoon and may continue into the evening, with a bulk of the heavier rain being north of the Palmer Divide, according to Gazette news partner KOAA. Snow is also possible in elevations of 9,000 feet and above.

As of 6 p.m., most of Colorado Springs had received nearly 0.10 inches of rainfall Tuesday, according to local reports from the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. In northern parts of Colorado Springs and Monument most gauges reported around 0.30 inches of rainfall.

Elevations above 12,000 feet could pick up 1 to 3 inches of snow by this evening, according to the NWS. Colorado State Patrol reported around 7 a.m. that there was almost a foot of snow in some areas above 9,000 feet in the mountains.

“Remember to pack the appropriate supplies, and use caution at all times,” the law enforcement agency said in a X post.

“Parts of Teller County are likely to see a changeover to snow during the overnight hours before rain and snow wrap before sunrise Wednesday morning,” said KOAA Meteorologist Alan Rose. “Any leftover rain or snow should clear out of the Pikes Peak Region before sunrise.”

Wind gusts could be as high as 30 mph in Colorado Springs, and temperatures are expected to reach around 61 degrees on Wednesday, according to the Weather Service. Temperatures will cool to around 43 degrees at night. Chances for showers and storms are 50-70%.

Sunshine with light winds will return Wednesday, with temperatures warming, which will continue into Friday.

Here’s the forecast in Colorado Springs for the rest of the week by the National Weather Service:

Thursday: It will be sunny during the day with a high near 77. Thursday night skies will be mostly clear with a low of around 48.

Friday: Sunny skies continue with temperatures rising to a high near 81. Skies will be partly cloudy at night, with a low around 51.
