Task force hosts community meeting for school board candidates

After releasing a 50-page report in June with recommendations for the Woodland Park school board, the WPSDForward task force hosts the Vision Forward Rally Oct. 1 at the Ute Pass Cultural Center.

The rally is nearly a month before the election to give the six candidates the opportunity to meet with the community in a public setting.

“Obviously the chamber is having the forum the next week, but the task force didn’t want ours to be a political event with question and debates,” Perry said. “We wanted this to be a positive and proactive vision forward rally.”

The candidates, Clayton Austin, Kassidi Gilgenast, Laura Gordon, Carol Greenstreet, Norm Michaels and Bert West, will have 5-10 minutes to talk about their vision for moving forward for the students, Perry said.

“We don’t want it to be negative; we want their ideas on how we can do better,” Perry said. “We want it ideal-based.”

Keegan Barkley and Mick Bates, who are not up for re-election, will also speak.

“It’s going to change; the school board will be different,” Perry said. “The goal is for community members to come away with more of a sense of who the candidates are.”

In addition, task force members will speak on topics that include ideas for fostering a nurturing learning environment.

An auxiliary benefit would be if people step up and volunteer to serve on various committees.

“We’re pretty sure, moving forward, that we’re all going to have to work together, residents, businesses and families, to understand what goals there are, what things do we need to supplement – maybe a band program, whatever,” he said. “I think it’s going to take the entire community to step up to help.”

As an incentive, the Park State Bank & Trust is offering a $100 coupon for attendees to present at the rally. The coupons will be in The Courier and on the task force website: www.wpsdforward.org.

The total number of the coupons will determine the amount of the grant the bank will give to the district, said Perry, who is the president and chief executive officer and founder of the 31-member task force.

“The bank will grant the funds wherever they are needed whatever needs emerge, this will benefit the entire district,” he said. “It could be up to $30,000.”

The coupon is an enticement for the residents to show up and learn by listening, Perry said.

WPSDForward is from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Ute Pass Cultural Center. Boards and Barrels restaurant will serve complimentary refreshments and desserts.
