Swing Factory plays fundraising concert for CCV High School
Professional drummer on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Robert Smith is on to another gig, reviving the bank program at the high school in Cripple Creek.
It’s a challenge.
“There has been no music program here for over 20 years,” Smith said. “And I’m out of instruments, trombone, saxophone, you name it, I’m out.”
Undaunted, Smith is going right at it, hosting a concert Sept. 27 to raise funds for new musical instruments.
The performance features Craig Harms and the Swing Factory band, with Smith on drums.
“The kids will be there volunteering, helping with loading, selling concessions,” Smith said. “The kids will be all over the place.”
The event includes marketing “merch” such as monogrammed T-shirts and hats.
“Laura Klein, the art teacher here, created up to five designs so people can choose which one they want,” Smith said. “And the money goes right back into the donation account.”
As the new band director, Smith hopes to fulfill the role for which he was hired.
“It’s worth a try. There are a ton of kids up here who want to be in band,” he said. “The fundraiser gives them something to look forward to, gives them a purpose because they’re not just learning but developing skills.”
Smith credits Cripple Creek/Victor School Board of Education member, Donna Brazil for helping publicize the concert, with flyers and word-of-mouth.
“We are working together on this,” Smith said. “We’d like to have parents involved so we can build a band boosters’ club, like most high schools have.”
The concert “Autumn Leaves” is at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Butte Theater in Cripple Creek. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 18 and are available at buttetheater.com, under “Special Events.”
