Driver arrested after fleeing in semitruck with excavator that hit I-25 overpass in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police arrested the driver of a semitruck that hit the overpass for the Martin Luther King Jr. bypass over Interstate 25 and fled the scene, according to a blotter entry by the department on Monday.

Three lanes were closed along southbound Interstate 25 on Monday afternoon after the semitruck made impact, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT posted on X that all lanes were reopened by 3:30 p.m.

The truck damaged an electronic sign board, and some vehicles were impacted by debris, according to the entry. A couple of hours later, the Stratmoor Hills Fire Department located the truck and excavator in the area of Venetucci Boulevard and Sam’s Heights.

The excavator was leaking fluids due to damage from the impact and a hazmat unit responded to ensure the scene was safe, the entry stated.

The driver, Miguel Hernandez Rivera, was en route to another job site in Pueblo. Rivera was cited with careless driving, oversized loads and hit-and-run, according to the entry.
