Final: Chargers 23, Broncos 20
The Broncos (1-1) begin AFC West play Sunday on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers (2-0). Kickoff is set for 2:05 p.m. on CBS.
Fourth quarter
Chargers go right down the field to set up the winning field goal. Dicker hits for the win.
Broncos don’t get a first down, and the Chargers have the ball with under two minutes left in a tie game.
Herbert with an unreal pass to Keenan Allen for a touchdown. Game tied at 20.
Bo Nix comes up just short on a long scramble, and the Broncos will put their faith in the defense again.
Chargers moved the ball a bit but the Denver pass rush does it again and L.A. is forced to punt.
Denver settles for a 26-yard field goal by Lutz. Broncos up 20-13.
The Broncos convert another fourth down and are inside the 10-yard line.
Broncos start with the ball and are facing a 4th down and 1.
Third quarter
End of third quarter: Broncos 17, Chargers 13
Another big sack by Bonitto, and the Broncos force a Chargers’ punt.
Denver goes three and out and will give the ball back to Los Angeles.
Broncos defense holds again in the red zone and keeps the Chargers to a field goal. Dicker good from 24 yards.
Denver converts the turnover into a Wil Lutz 42-yard field goal to put the Broncos up 7.
Jonah Elliss punches the ball out on the kickoff return and the Broncos have the ball again.
It takes three plays by J.K. Dobbins, and the Broncos take a 14-10 lead. Dobbins accounts for every yard on the drive.
Broncos start the second half with the ball.
Second quarter
The Broncos go it on 4th and 2 and hit a 52-yard TD pass to Courtland Sutton. Broncos cut the Chargers’ lead to 3.
A 3-yard TD run by rookie Omarion Hampton puts the Chargers up 10-0 with just under two minutes to go in first half.
The Broncos call a flea-flicker on 3rd and long, but the ball just bounces off Mims’ hands. The Chargers then return the punt 38 yards to set up Los Angeles.
Broncos safety Brandon Jones comes up with a pick with the Chargers in field goal range. Denver defense is pressuring Justin Herbert a lot early in the game.
First quarter
End of the first quarter: Chargers 3, Broncos 0
The Broncos can’t take advantage of the good field position. A good punt by Crawshaw pins the Chargers at the 11-yard line.
A pair of sacks by Cooper and Bonitto blows up the Chargers’ drive. Mims with another good return, and the Broncos are at midfield.
A holding call on Adam Trautman and then a lot of nothing for the Broncos. Denver punts again.
Plenty of flags to start the game, but the Broncos actually force the punt this time. Marvin Mims with a 32-yard punt return.
Chargers go three and out on their second drive, but Nik Bonitto lines up offsides on the punt and gives L.A. a first down.
Broncos go three and out on their opening drive. RJ Harvey gets the ball twice on the drive.
Denver defense gives up a big play but holds when L.A. gets into the red zone. Chargers up 3-0 after 32-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker.
Broncos win the toss and defer. Denver defense on the field first.
