Man accused of trying to break into El Paso County Sheriff’s Office

Mitchell Highsmith

A man is in custody for allegedly attempting to break into the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in downtown Colorado Springs.

The arrest came after the main entrance of the office, 27 E. Vermijo Ave., was damaged and vandalized early Friday morning, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

Security footage shows the man attempting to break into the building shortly after 4:15 a.m. After failing to gain access, the man became “enraged” and vandalized security hardware, the new release states.

Later that morning, the suspect, who was wearing distinct clothing seen in the security footage, was spotted walking across the street toward Centennial Hall by Sheriff’s Office employees. Deputies stopped the man, 62-year-old Mitchell Highsmith, and arrested him.

Highsmith is being held in the El Paso County jail on attempted second-degree burglary and felony criminal mischief charges. Jail records show he is being held on a $2,000 bond.
