Jackson Mabe rushes for four TDs, Palmer Ridge routs Lewis-Palmer 61-15

Jackson Mabe’s trip to Don Breese Stadium served as just another day at the office.

As Palmer Ridge players and their fan section celebrated on the field with the General Palmer Cup trophy and shared lengthy exchanges, Mabe offered a succinct explanation regarding his feelings after the 61-15 win against rival Lewis-Palmer on Friday.

“Good,” Mabe said. “It just felt good.”

Mabe’s game spoke volumes against the Rangers as the Bears running back tied a career high with four touchdowns and cleared 100 yards in the victory. After Knox Tinlin found Magnus Newman on a 43-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 in the first quarter, Mabe ran wild.

The senior running back scored on runs of 20 and 38 yards to build a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. Mabe scored the first two touchdowns of the second half on runs of 2 and 7 yards for the Bears, who had running clock and a 48-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

In his junior campaign, Mabe scored 16 touchdowns in 12 games, but never eclipsed 100 yards. Through three games this season, he has eight rushing scores and has run for more than 100 yards in two of those contests.

“This is all about the offensive line,” Mabe said. “They’re the workhorses and they’re the ones helping me get all these scores. They’re the ones getting the job done.”

Mabe’s teammates also lavished in the offensive success as Tinlin and Newman connected twice on passing touchdowns, Cole Harris, Zak Crisler and Carter Charron each ran for one.

The Bears had a cozy 54-15 lead late in the fourth but never relented. Palmer Ridge already recovered a pair of Lewis-Palmer (2-1) muffed kickoffs in the game and turned those into points.

Then, on the penultimate possession for the Rangers, Eli Stewart baited the offense into an interception which he returned for a touchdown to give the Bears another score and the most points ever scored by either team in this rivalry.

“I was in Cover 1, I read the receiver and I saw him push vertical,” Stewart said. “It looked like he was going to run a pass and I saw the QB roll out. I led a bit behind him to bait the throw and he threw it and I took it to the house for six.”

Stewart’s pick-6 punctuated the game but also illustrated the Bears’ refusal to overlook any opponent. Palmer Ridge has won this rivalry game eight consecutive times and last lost to the Rangers in 2016. In each of their recent victories, the Bears have won by at least 28 points.

That’s helped the Bears start at least 3-0 for seven consecutive seasons and Bears coach Zach Carlton said they enter every contest cognizant that they’re required to earn the victory.

“Lewis-Palmer is a disciplined program and that’s a tough offense to stop,” Carlton said. “They challenge us to be sound in what we do. … We’re never going to take a game for granted, no matter who our opponent is. They practice just how we practice and they work how we work. We focus on our standard and practice and at the end of the day if we focus on those things, we’re going to turn out a good product.”

The Bears return to Don Breese at 7 p.m. Friday with a chance to go 4-0 and face Longmont, who Palmer Ridge defeated 49-14 in their road game last year.
