More campsites coming to state park in Colorado Springs

People in Colorado Springs won’t have to travel far to find a new spot to camp in the near future.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park Manager Jason Hagan calls the park “a nature oasis within the city” — the population center’s close proximity lending to the popularity of the campground.

“And then there’s the full hookups,” Hagan said. “People really want full hookups with their RVs.”

They’ll have nine more spots to choose from at the campground under construction, adding to the state park’s current 61 campsites.

The new campground loop is expected to open next spring or summer, Hagan said.

“Which is great, because we’re at full capacity basically the day it gets warm to the day it gets cold,” he said in a recent presentation to the city’s Trails, Open Space and Parks Working Committee. “April through October, we’re pretty much full every single day.”

More campsites have been anticipated for years, pending funds. The new sites will be near the others, off a currently gated dirt road that leads to a slightly raised point overlooking the eastern plains and western meadows and woods rolling to Cheyenne Mountain.

“The views are gonna be amazing,” Hagan said.

The campground will be the next overnight option at the state park, which a few years ago added two cabins. The cabins sleep up to six people.

A trail system sprawling nearly 30 miles — including a long, arduous hike up toward the top of Cheyenne Mountain — might be reason to stay a while at the park. Added Hagan: “It’s beautiful and way less busy than a lot of other places in the area.”

In his presentation he reported “steady” visitation around 194,000 in recent years.

He reported other developments: a weekend program taking people with disabilities out on small, ATV-like Terrain Hoppers acquired last year and, more recently, a mountain bike rental program.
