4 pounds of meth sniffed out from vehicle in Colorado Springs

Jorge Hernandez Ornelas

A man is in custody after the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said it found 4 pounds of meth inside a vehicle that it believes is used to transport “large quantities” of illegal drugs, authorities said Friday.

On Aug. 18, deputies spotted a suspicious Chevrolet Sonic with a fake license plate along Interstate 25 during a multi-agency Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement (BATTLE) operation in the evening, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, 26-year-old Jorge Hernandez Ornelas, who allegedly didn’t provide a driver’s license and gave “multiple inconsistencies” in his statements, the news release states.

A K-9 dog sniffed out the presence of drugs around the vehicle, and deputies said they found a hidden compartment that had been modified to transport drugs.

Hernandez Ornelas allegedly admitted to having the 4 pounds of meth inside the vehicle, and then was arrested and taken to the El Paso County jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond.

He is facing multiple drug-related charges, including the unlawful possession, distribution, manufacturing, dispensing or sale of a controlled substance.
