The Colorado Springs District 11 Board of Education on Wednesday swore in Amanda Huber to replace board member Lauren Nelson, who resigned last month to focus on her role as El Paso County commissioner

“I wanted to thank the board and the community for taking me in and I look forward to working with all of the rest of you for the next three months,” she said following her appointment.

Huber will serve the duration of Nelson’s term until the new board is seated in December. She is not a candidate in the Nov. 4 election.

Ahead of Huber’s appointment, the board passed a resolution of appreciation for Nelson, who was in attendance, and her service over the past four years. Board members and Superintendent Michael Gaal noted her work as the board’s treasurer and implementing changes in the district’s budget.

“You have single-handedly changed the way school districts will budget in the state of Colorado forevermore,” Gaal told her.

Following El Paso County Commissioner Cami Bremer’s resignation in May, Nelson was appointed as her replacement in June. She cited her increased workload with these new commitments to the Board of County Commissioners as the primary reason for stepping down from the school board.

“I look forward to seeing the great things continue in District 11 and I know I’ve left it in really good hands and it has been such a blessing to serve alongside each of you,” she said.
