Lightning delay results in Vanguard boys’ soccer win over Thomas MacLaren in lopsided match
A soccer match between the Vanguard School and Thomas MacLaren was victim to the Pikes Peak region’s stormy weather Thursday, handing the Coursers a win after play was suspended due to lightning.
The match start time had already been pushed back 30 minutes from earlier lightning.
Vanguard was up 4-1 over the Highlanders at halftime, but lightning delayed the start of the second half by 30 minutes. The lightning continued, resulting in officials calling the match and Vanguard getting its second win of the season.
With Thursday’s loss, Thomas McLaren is winless this fall with three straight losses.
The contest started off with a goal by Jacob Figueroa in the 14th minute, and the sophomore celebrated his second goal of the season by running past the stands and raising his arms to hype up the crowd.
Highlander junior Matthew Christenson responded about 10 minutes later with a goal to tie the score at 1-1.
The Coursers began to heat up in the last 10 minutes of the first half with a goal by junior Devin Jain, followed up with back-to-back scores from junior Isai Savelkoul to extend their lead to three into the half.
“Toward the end we had some really good connections for sure, I think we could have scored a whole bunch more goals,” Savelkoul said. “It was good to see our team come together toward the end. Pretty sad about the delay but looking forward to the rest of the season, I think we can go really far.”
