Severe thunderstorms warning issued for Pikes Peak region

thunderstorms_weather

The National Weather Service in Pueblo issued a warning with “high” certainty that severe thunderstorms will impact most of the Pikes Peak region Sunday.

Hail measuring up to 1½ inches and 60 mph winds are forecast for El Paso County between 2 and 8 p.m. The weather agency also warned of localized flash floods in areas of heavy rainfall.

With each rainfall, the risk of flash flooding increases. Those in areas impacted by flash flooding should stay off roadways, as 12 inches of water can “sweep a car off the road,” the weather agency said. It reminded drivers to “turn around, don’t drown.”

Rainfall will likely continue into the week.

Monday’s forecast

Monday is expected to be rainy, with a 90% chance of all-day thunderstorms and rainfall. The weather agency said the high will be 69 degrees, and up to a half-inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday’s forecast

Tuesday will likely bring more heavy rain with a 70% chance of all-day thunderstorms. The high is expected to be 72 degrees, and the weather agency says a quarter-inch of rain is expected, but could be higher in areas of heavy rainfall.

Wednesday’s forecast

Wednesday will heat up, with a high of 80 degrees, but thunderstorms are expected to continue. There is an 80% chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, according to the weather agency.

Thursday’s forecast

Thursday will likely bring more all-day rain, with a 70% chance of precipitation in the region. The high is expected to be around 76 degrees, forecasters said.

Friday’s forecast

More rain is likely Friday, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms and rainfall in the region. The high is expected to be around 77 degrees, according to the weather agency.
