One year after girls’ flag football’s inaugural season, several new teams were added for the 2025 fall season, including two from the greater Pikes Peak region.

Fountain Fort-Carson and Palmer are among 12 new teams in the state, with both kicking off this week. With the additions, there are 72 participating flag football schools in Colorado.

The Trojans opened their season with a loss to Valor Christian on Tuesday and will open at home Sept. 9 against Elizabeth. Palmer beat the Vanguard School in its season opener at home Tuesday and will face Fountain Fort-Carson at home next Tuesday.

The two programs join Vista Ridge, Coronado, Colorado Springs Christian, Vanguard School, Classical Academy, Air Academy and Doherty in the Pikes Peak region.

Doherty and Fountain Fort-Carson will compete in 5A while the rest will compete in 4A.

Last season, TCA finished as 4A state runner-up after falling to Mountain View in the state championship.

The other new flag football programs in Colorado are: Hinkley, Eagle Ridge Academy, Wheat Ridge, Regis Groff, Monarch, Golden, Steamboat Springs, Standley Lake, Skyview, Poudre School District.

During Colorado High School Activities Association Media Days, Trojan coach Michael Clayborn expressed his excitement for the school’s inaugural season and shared that Doherty coach Rodney Pierson has been his mentor as he has transitioned into the role. Clayborn was a previous assistant at Doherty.

“Although they are our rivals, I feel we will do well in the season and that’s more of what I’m looking forward to, is starting strong and finishing strong,” Clayborn said. “By the time we get to these graduating seniors we’ll be ready for whatever competition comes our way.”
