Arthur H. Trickett-Wile,The Gazette
The 2025 prep fall season continues as tackle football enters Zero Week with a handful of games. Below are five contests of note overall in the Pikes Peak region.
Football
Thursday
Falcon vs. Rampart (District 20 Stadium) 7 p.m.
Falcon owns a 2-1 record against Rampart, however, the one came via a 39-0 loss to the Rams in the 2024 season opener. The Rams finished the game with four forced turnovers and held the Falcons to 203 all-purpose yards.
Rampart scored 33 points or more four times last season and finished 7-5 en route to a 4A playoff berth and first-round victory. The Falcons hope to shift gears following a 2-8 season where they scored 112 total points in 10 contests.
Friday
Valor Christian vs. Pine Creek (District 20 Stadium) 7 p.m.
Pine Creek coach Trevor Hudson begins his tenure as Eagles coach against a Valor team ranked No. 2 in the state, per MaxPreps. Pine Creek finished 7-4 in 2024 and secured a 4A playoff berth.
Sans the 2020-21 COVID-shortened season where the Eagles finished 2-3, Pine Creek has not had a losing record since 2012 when they finished 4-6.
Valor Christian is one of four teams that owns a winning record against the Eagles with at least three matchups (6-1). Valor Christian’s Eagles will also integrate a new coach in the game as Mike Sanford looks for his first victory.
Flag football
Thursday
Colorado Springs Christian School vs. Palmer (Garry Berry) 6 p.m.
Palmer’s first season with a flag football squad continues with a matchup against Colorado Springs Christian, which will look to improve from its 3-11 mark in 2024. The Lions lost just five seniors from last year’s team, but included in that bunch is quarterback Kaitlyn Armes.
In their inaugural year, the Terrors flaunt a roster of 20 competitors. Freshman Noa Harrison earned the captain spot and will play quarterback for Palmer.
Fountain-Fort Carson at Coronado, 7:30 p.m.
Coronado opens the season at home and hopes to bounce back from its first year. The Cougars finished 2-11 and hope to sharpen their defensive prowess after allowing just under 26 points per game last season.
Tatiana Gonzalez and Lyric Enger return on defense for the Cougars and aim to lift Coronado to several more wins. In its first season, Fountain-Fort Carson opens with three consecutive road contests. The Cougars will host the Trojans for their second away game.
Girls volleyball
Thursday
Sand Creek vs. Village (Mountain Ridge Middle School), 8 p.m.
After earning the 3A girls volleyball state championship in 2024, the Mountaineers begin their title defense against the Scorpions, who they swept in last year’s opener.
The Mountaineers ended their inaugural campaign on a 12-match winning streak and dropped just 14 sets en route to a 26-3 campaign. The Mountaineers have not lost to a Colorado team since Aug. 30, 2024, when 5A Cherry Creek defeated Village 2-0. Should the Scorpions win, it would avenge their loss and end the Mountaineers’ string of success.
