Colorado Springs traffic update: 3-month bridge repair project starts
A downtown revitalization project reaches a new stage, while the city of Colorado Springs embarks on repairs and repaving on Woodmen Road.
Here are the traffic updates to know heading into the week of Aug. 18.
Woodmen Road
This week, crews will began repairs to the Woodmen Road Bridge over Academy Boulevard, a project expected to take about three months.
The bridge, built in 2011, is in need of resurfacing and routine repairs, according to the city of Colorado Springs. Repairs are expected to cost about $2.7 million.
Starting in September, the city will also be repaving Woodmen from East Rockrimmon Boulevard to past Olga Wilson Way. The project will happen at night, with single lane closures. It should be complete in three to five weeks.
The repaving project’s $1.6 million cost comes from the 2C Road Improvement Program, a sales tax approved by voters in 2019. A second round of funding was approved in 2024.
Tejon Street
The west side of the block of Tejon Street from Colorado to Pikes Peak avenues in downtown Colorado Springs will reopen Aug. 25. Improvements along this stretch of Tejon include wider sidewalks, increased patio space and aesthetic upgrades like new benches, trees and lighting. The construction is part of the multimillion-dollar Tejon Street revitalization project that began in March.
Traffic patterns are changing in downtown Colorado Springs as the Tejon Street Revitalization Project reaches its halfway point.
Starting Monday, drivers can expect to see a full closure of Tejon Street from Colorado Avenue to Pikes Peak Avenue for milling, paving and striping of the roadway. The street may reopen to two-way traffic and diagonal street parking as early as Aug. 25, according to the city.
Tejon Street project's first block almost set to reopen
North of Pikes Peak Avenue, the city is anticipating a potential closure of northbound Tejon Street for Colorado Springs Utilities to perform electrical systems work. Crews may be removing and replacing pavement at the southeast corner of the block.
Starting Sept. 2, Tejon from Pikes Peak Avenue to East Kiowa Street will also be fully closed for construction of new sidewalks and patios. Pedestrian routes to businesses will remain open, but street parking will be closed.
Businesses on the block will have vouchers for free parking at the city garages. For more information visit ColoradoSprings.gov/tejonstreet.
