Trackchairs coming to 2 more parks in Colorado Springs

Cristin Byrnes explored Red Rock Canyon for the first time

Colorado Springs officials are expanding a program aimed at getting people with disabilities out on the trails.

Since last year, the city’s Parks Department has reserved free, guided trips at Red Rock Canyon and Blodgett open spaces for visitors in need of a Trackchair, a one-seat vehicle moving atop conveyor wheels. By October, the plan is to offer trips also at Ute Valley Park and Bluestem Prairie Open Space.

“We are excited to offer more opportunities for everyone to explore and enjoy our amazing open spaces,” Regional Parks Manager Scott Abbott said in a recent announcement. “This program enriches the outdoor experience for individuals of all abilities, ensuring that our amazing trails and open spaces are open to all who wish to discover the beauty of nature.”

El Paso County previously launched a program with the same mission. With ATV-like Terrain Hoppers, staff and volunteers have guided outings from Bear Creek and Fountain Creek nature centers. Terrain Hoppers have also been reserved at Cheyenne Mountain State Park — among a growing list of state parks that have acquired such vehicles.

Colorado Springs’ Parks Department announced acquiring two Trackchairs in 2023, thanks to funding through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Outdoor Equality Grant program and the city’s Office of Accessibility. A “soft launch” offered 12 reservations for Trackchair riders alongside friends and family.

Now by expanding to four parks and open spaces, the Parks Department reports it will have offered more than 220 sessions by the end of the season.

Currently at coloradosprings.gov/trackchair, morning and afternoon sessions can be reserved for weekdays and weekends through September.

The county’s Trailability Program is taking free reservations through October. Cheyenne Mountain State Park’s Terrain Hopper can be reserved for Fridays and Saturdays through September.
