Colorado Springs traffic updates: Bridge construction means closures in southeast
Christian Murdock/The Gazette
A major stage of construction on a multi-million dollar bridge replacement means closures next week underneath the span, while a Falcon intersection will see an extended closure due to unforeseen issues.
Here’s where you’ll be seeing cones in the Colorado Springs area for the week of Aug. 10.
East Las Vegas Street and Hancock Expressway
Two roads are planned to close while construction continues on the new Circle Drive bridges in the southeast part of Colorado Springs next week.
The city will close Las Vegas Street and Hancock Expressway on Sunday in preparation for pouring the concrete decking on the westbound bridge.
- Evening of Sunday, Aug. 10 to just after noon on Monday, Aug. 11.
Drivers traveling north on East Las Vegas Street will need to detour onto Highway 85 North/Venetucci Boulevard to Circle Drive, then access alternate routes from there. Drivers traveling south should find alternate routes by using Janitell Road.
Drivers traveling north on the Hancock Expressway will need to use Delta Drive to Circle Drive, then turn onto East Fountain Boulevard. Southbound drivers will need to detour on Circle Drive to Interstate 25 heading east, then exit onto South Academy Boulevard.
The $40 million replacement of the Circle Drive bridges is set to be completed by the end of the year. The eastbound bridge opened in fall 2024. More information on the project can be found at ColoradoSprings.gov/CircleDrBridges.
For more up-to-date information on the weather-dependent closure, the city has a hotline at 719-428-7090.
Rolling Thunder Way and Foxtail Meadow Road
Starting on Monday, Aug. 11, an intersection connecting the commercial centers of Falcon will be closed for reconstruction.
Foxtail Meadow Road, which connects to Woodmen Road behind the Falcon Walmart, has been under construction for repaving and reclamation since Aug. 4.
Next week El Paso County is anticipating the extended closure of the intersection with Rolling Thunder Way due to soil saturation, which requires crews to allow time for pavement treatment to cure before laying asphalt.
“El Paso County is completing this work to ensure that the roadway will be rebuilt to last and prevent any additional issues from occurring in the future,” reads a release on the update.
Access to the nearby neighborhood will go through Golden Sage and Woodmen for the estimated 10-day closure.
Ellston Street
A residential street that passes under I-25 north near the Fillmore exit will be closed next week for ongoing construction to the interstate bridge deck.
The closure will allow construction starting on Sunday that may impact local traffic with construction vehicles entering and exiting the worksite, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
- Sunday, Aug. 10, to Saturday, Aug. 16, crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A detour will take drivers north on Chestnut Street, right to Garden of the Gods Road, then right onto Sinton Road.
On the interstate, the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from mile point 144 to MP 146.
The closure is part of a CDOT project to increase safety along I-25 by adding acceleration and deceleration lanes. The project started in October 2023 and is expected to finish by August 2026. Part of the project includes reconstruction and widening of the aging bridge over Ellston Street.
