Quintin McCarty will have a shot at gold during the World Aquatics Championships.
McCarty clocked in at 24.52 seconds during the men’s 50 meter backstroke semifinals Saturday in Singapore to secure a slot in Sunday’s finals.
The former Thunder swimmer and current North Carolina State competitor touched the wall nearly three tenths of a second faster than his opening race Friday and, during Saturday’s semifinals heat, was 0.36 seconds off first place, Pieter Coetze of South Africa.
McCarty can earn his first gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships with a victory and will swim in lane one for the finals.
The race starts at 5:02 a.m. and, those who wish to watch a replay of the event, can view the competition through the Peacock app.
On the women’s side, former Cheyenne Mountain swimmer Caroline Bricker, who competed in Friday’s 200 fly finals, finished sixth with a time of 2:07.59 and trimmed .27 seconds from her semifinals swim.
Bricker’s American teammate and Olympic medalist Regan Smith placed second in the race with a time of 2:04.99.
