On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Denver announced that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of a 15-year-old Colorado Springs girl who was sold fentanyl.
Eugene Edwards, 57, and Destiny Benjamin, 30, of Colorado Springs, were arrested on June 13 on charges of a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, resulting in death. The charge carries a penalty of “no less” than 20 years, and up to life in prison, according to the FBI.
A news release from the bureau states that the Colorado Springs Police Department arrived at the scene of a 15-year-old girl who had overdosed and died on June 7. Upon initial investigation, police found nine blue pills, marked with “M 30,” wrapped in a receipt that was later linked to Edwards through his Bath and Body Works account.

Police searched the victim’s phone and discovered she had plans to meet Edwards at an elementary school in Colorado Springs to buy pills the night before her death. Phone records indicate that Edwards messaged the 15-year-old girl, “I’m your friend,” when trying to persuade her to buy pills on May 28, according to an arrest affidavit.
On June 6, after allegedly selling her the pills that would kill her, Edwards texted, “Delete all texts and calls,” according to the affidavit.
The news release states that surveillance cameras near the school caught Edwards’ work truck with his phone number listed on the side that night.

The release also states that one hour later, video captured the victim outside her home smoking a substance believed to be fentanyl. She died shortly after.

Phone records between Edwards and Benjamin indicate they had a unique relationship: prostitution, pet names and narcotics.
Edwards’ arrest affidavit details messages he sent to Benjamin, most of which were inquiring about purchasing large amounts of methamphetamines and fentanyl, but were usually preceded by a, “honey,” or “baby.” At one instance, Edwards asked Benjamin to perform a sexual act on him for money. She replied, “Not tonight, I’m with my kids.”
Edwards was arrested on June 13, and police say they found fentanyl pills wrapped in another Bath and Body Works receipt in his vehicle, among other substances.
When asked where he got the fentanyl from, Edwards told investigators that his only source of fentanyl was from Benjamin, according to the news release.
Benjamin was also arrested on June 13, and police say she had fentanyl, methamphetamines and a loaded handgun in her possession. When questioned, police say she told investigators that she sold illegal narcotics to Edwards.
Edwards and Benjamin made their first appearance in Federal Court in Denver on Monday. Conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, resulting in death, carries a potential penalty of up to life in prison and no more than a $1 million fine.
