Traffic update: Weekend closure in east Colorado Springs
Closures continue on an interchange project on the east side of Colorado Springs, while projects to enhance pedestrian safety may cause neighborhood detours and delays.
Here’s a roundup of road construction around the Pikes Peak region for the upcoming week.
East Platte Avenue
Starting Friday, the eastbound East Platte Avenue on-ramp to southbound Powers Boulevard will be closed over the weekend for concrete paving.
- 7 p.m. on Friday, July 25 to 4 a.m. on Monday, July 28
The closure is part of an ongoing project through the Colorado Department of Transportation on the Powers Boulevard and Airport Road Interchange project.
A detour will direct drivers traveling eastbound to turn onto Troy Hill Road to the right, then turn onto Airport Road to get back to Powers. For the route, crews have created a temporary all-way stop at the intersection of Troy Hill and Airport Road.
The westbound East Platte Avenue on-ramp to southbound Powers Boulevard will stay open and is not impacted by construction.

North Chelton Road
Drivers will see construction closures starting next week around North Chelton Road in front of Twain Elementary School.
The project, according to the city of Colorado Springs, is to increase school safety by reconfiguring the crosswalk and shortening the pedestrian crossing by installing bump outs.
The city says the changes will help protect pedestrians, especially school-goers walking from local neighborhoods.
While the project won’t close the roadway, drivers should expect lane shifts and bike lane closures. Construction is expected to start on Monday, July 28, and last about two weeks, wrapping up before the beginning of the school year.

Chimayo Drive
Road work on a Security-Widefield neighborhood is expected to start next week to replace cross paths along Chimayo Drive.
The work will be near the Bison Drive intersection, with one at the intersection and the other west on the roadway.
According to El Paso County, the work will start on Wednesday, July 30 and last for five days.
Chimayo Drive will be closed as it curves left toward Bison Drive, and Bison Drive will be closed at the intersection. Drivers will need to detour to other neighborhood roads shown on the county’s map.
