House Republicans and President Donald Trump delivered for the American people. The One Big, Beautiful Bill, some of the most conservative legislation worked on in Congress, delivers the largest tax cuts in American history, ensures no tax on tips or overtime, protects Medicaid for our nation’s most vulnerable, increases defense spending, secures our borders and more. The bill promises a prosperous future for our country, yet there are some who continue to promote falsehoods about what this bill does.

As the Representative for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, it is my duty to outline why I voted for this bill. Let’s get this straight: the One Big, Beautiful Bill protects the Medicaid system for the most vulnerable and those that truly need it; benefits for pregnant women, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities would see no changes with their Medicaid plans.

The bill does put in place commonsense work requirements for able-bodied individuals who apply for coverage through Medicaid — it’s perfectly reasonable to ask for some basic accountability in return.

Working part time, volunteering, or being enrolled in job training or school would qualify for the work requirements. Most Americans get health insurance through their job, so it makes sense for the government to apply a similar idea to Medicaid. This provision and others aimed at rooting out waste, fraud and abuse will strengthen the Medicaid program and ensure its fiscal sustainability for the future.

The bill also prevents the largest tax hike in history and provides much needed tax relief for working families in CO-05 by making the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts permanent.

Had they been allowed to expire this year, working families in CO-05 would have seen an average of a 21% tax hike, over 95,000 families would see their household’s Child Tax Credit cut in half, and over 73,000 small businesses in the district would be hit with a 43% tax rate. Extending these tax cuts provides CO-05 families and small businesses more money in their pockets, another win for the American people.

Furthermore, one of the biggest incentives in this bill was no tax on tips or overtime. Many American workers that rely on tips or overtime will receive a tax break through 2028. This will deliver tax relief to millions of working Americans!

Moreover, securing funding for our defense in the One Big, Beautiful Bill is a win for our military-heavy district. Defense spending has not kept pace with inflation, this bill changes that.

We face new threats from our adversaries every day; we cannot allow our deterrence to fail. The bill allows us to invest in our military’s future, allowing us to remain the biggest and strongest military in the world. This funding will kick start development of the Golden Dome for America, deter our adversaries in China and Russia, and advance the president’s peace through strength agenda.

The bill will also continue support for Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division as it keeps our southern border secure, and increase the basic allowance for housing by $2.9 billion.

Those who chose to vote against this bill voted for the largest tax increase in history, against increased compensation for service men and women, and to allow Medicaid to grow exponentially toward bankruptcy without cutting out the waste, fraud and abuse.

Overall, the bill provides relief for our working families and small businesses, protects our nation’s most vulnerable, and makes our nation stronger than ever. I am proud to say I voted in favor of One Big, Beautiful Bill.
