Victim and suspect in Thursday’s road-rage fatal shooting identified

Accused shooter in fatal road-rage incident tells Colorado Springs police he was defending a friend

Colorado Springs police have named the suspect and victim in last week’s apparent road-rage fatal shooting at the intersection of East Platte Avenue and North Cedar Street.

Police said that at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday three vehicles were driving near the intersection east of downtown when there was a disturbance between two of the drivers. The drivers pulled over and got into a verbal argument that turned physical, with one of the drivers allegedly pulling out a gun and shooting at another.

Matthew Helberg, 39, of Colorado Springs, was found deceased at the scene.

On Monday, the Colorado Springs Police Department named 31-year-old Howard Heyliger of Colorado Springs as the suspected shooter. He was taken into custody and faces a charge of murder in the second degree. His next court appearance is scheduled July 8.
