Mark Hensby continues his mastery of the front nine on the East Course.

Hensby started his second round on the back nine, so he is through 13 holes.

A little course familiarity is clearly suiting Padraig Harrington at The Broadmoor.
The Irish three-time major champion has expanded his lead at the U.S. Senior Open. Playing the back nine first on Friday morning, Harrington is 3-under for his round through eight holes and is now 6-under for the championship, leading Mark Hensby by three shots.
Hensby tees off at 1:43 p.m.
Harrington’s performance on the back nine suggests he could open a commanding lead, as the front nine has generally provided far more scoring chances.
After firing 3-under par 67 on Thursday, Harrington noted that he was still growing familiar with the course. His practice round was rained out after seven holes on Tuesday, so his only complete round had come early in the morning on Wednesday.
“It was a little bit tentative in the lead,” Harrington said of his Thursday round. “I suppose it’s a little harder when you’re leading and not knowing the course 100 percent like you would like to.”
Asked by The Gazette if the familiarity gained Thursday would change anything for him on Friday, Harrington wasn’t so sure.
“Still I’ve got to play it in the morning tomorrow, which is different than the afternoon. So again, still going to be feeling my way around; not 100 percent sure.
To be honest in the altitude, with the ups and downs, and if the wind swirls at all, I think you’re going to have to make decisions as you go all the time this week. You couldn’t sit in the clubhouse and decide what clubs you’re going to hit all day. You’re going to have to get to the tee box and go, okay, the wind is this way, this is how I feel, I’ll take this bunker on, or I’ll lay up a bit.
There’s quite a bit of that out there. Like I hit 5-wood off of 10 today. It was conservative play, and then it didn’t turn down the hill and it ended up I was too far back. Even though I was on the fairway I had like 200 meters hitting a 7-iron, and it just went — pitched middle of the green and it went through.
I paid for being conservative off the tee, but I did think I would get a bit of run. So I’m not sure what I’m going to do in the morning. Right now I’m not sure if I’m going to hit 5-wood, 3-wood, or driver off that tee. That sums up the golf course in quite a few places.”
8:40 a.m.
Padraig Harrington, who shared the lead at 3-under par with Mark Hensby after Round 1, is among the players who have teed off early.
Harrington is wasting no time getting started. The Irishman grabbed the sole lead of the major championship with a birdie on No. 10, his first hole of the day.
Hensby, the Australian who got off to a torrid start (seven birdies in the first nine holes) Thursday, is scheduled to start at 1:43 p.m.
American Stewart Cink, a shot back at 2 under to start the day, is playing in the group with Harrington. He parred his first hole.
Major champions Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Justin Leonard all will play morning rounds Friday.
