Colorado Springs’ furry protectors now have a little more protection themselves, thanks to a recent “charitable” donation from a nonprofit, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

K-9 unit officers, Blue, Loki and Nyx, received bullet and stab protective vests after a donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., officials said in a news release Wednesday.

K-9 officer Loki’s vest was sponsored by Colorado Springs residents, Laura and Tom Kelecy, and was embroidered with the sentiment “Gifted by Laura & Tom Kelecy in K9 Britta’s Memory.”

Officials said K-9 Blue’s vest was sponsored by Tim and Jenni Brown with an embroidered sentiment of “In honor of protecting all that serve and protect.”

K-9 officer Nyx’s vest was sponsored by the family, friends and colleagues of Detective Jared S. Jensen, and is embroidered with “In honor of Detective Jared S. Jensen.”

According to the release, the nonprofit has provided over 6,120 vests valued at nearly $7 million to K-9 officers across the country thanks to private and corporate donations.

The potentially life-saving vests are custom fitted to each K-9 and are National Institute of Justice certified, the release said.
