Suspects in fatal Colorado Springs crash were speeding at about 100 mph, witness reports

The two men facing vehicular homicide charges following a traffic crash in east Colorado Springs Saturday were speeding down Constitution Avenue “about 100 mph,” court documents allege.

Julio Lopez and Christian Bustillo allegedly caused a three-vehicle crash around 9 p.m. by driving at a “high rate of speed.” The crash killed 61-year-old Charles Carlton, a Colorado Springs resident of over 30 years. According to court documents, police believe Bustillo was under the influence at the time.

The collision took place at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Alpine Drive just before 9 p.m. when Lopez struck Carlton’s car after another vehicle got in his way, police said. According to court documents, a witness told police that he saw a tan truck and red car driving westbound on Constitution at about 100 mph before crashing.

Carlton was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Christine Taylor, Carlton’s daughter, said she was supposed to see him that Saturday.

“He had called me to see if I wanted to go get burgers and go to the grocery store … before he hung up, he said, ‘I love you,” she said. “I tried to call him that night, but he didn’t answer, but I figured he was just asleep.”

Hours later, Taylor got the phone call from police while she was at home with her 8-year-old daughter.

“I went outside to just kind of breathe because I just couldn’t breathe. And I kept asking them, ‘Where is he?’ I guess my brain wouldn’t compute that they were trying to tell me that he had passed,” she said. “He was four houses away from his home.”

Taylor said everyone in the family is broken up about her father’s death, and her daughter, who Carlton was a father-figure for, still doesn’t understand that he’s not around anymore.

“It’s papa. He’s invincible. We all joked about that he’s so stubborn and ornery that he’s going to outlive everybody. So, everyone is just shocked about it — it doesn’t make sense,” she said.

Taylor said her father’s legacy is herself and her daughter — the two people he cared for most in the world.

“Me and my dad were as thick as thieves. He was my best friend,” she said.

Bustillo, 21, emitted a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath, and his eyes were glassy and red following the crash, according to his arrest affidavit. Officers found a blue shooter bottle of an alcoholic beverage, a second bottle of alcohol and a Ziplock baggie with suspected Marijuana in his red Dodge Charger at the time of his arrest.

Bustillo reportedly also combative and attempted to self-harm according to his arrest affidavit.

Lopez, 21, was taken to a hospital following the crash, where he told police that he was driving his silver Dodge Ram truck at 46 mph when another vehicle turned in front of him right before impact, according to his arrest affidavit.

The witness told police Lopez had attempted to leave the scene on foot and had to be taken back after being found about half a block away.

Lopez and Bustillo bonded out of the El Paso County Jail on Tuesday, according to court records. They are both scheduled in court on June 30.

Records show that Bustillo was arrested while driving under the influence two separate times in 2024. In May, he was arrested for speeding 25 mph over the speed limit. In October, he was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash.
