A suspect is dead following a gunfire exchange with police in east Colorado Springs early Monday, according to law enforcement officials.
The incident took place near an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Michelle Court, near South Murray Boulevard, after officers responded to a 1 a.m. shots-fired call. When the officers arrived, they found a man with a gun and ordered him to drop it, police said.
The man reportedly fired at least one shot toward the officers. Two officers returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional injuries were reported.
In accordance with state law, the two involved officers are on leave, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will take the lead on the investigation.
The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
A significant event video briefing, with body camera footage from the shooting, will be released within 21 days of the incident, police said.
