A body found Monday near the summit of Pikes Peak has been identified as a New Hampshire man reported missing on the mountain, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Russell Hardy, 55, reportedly traveled to the Colorado Springs area with plans to hike Pikes Peak. He arrived June 10 and was scheduled to return home June 12.

After failing to return as planned, family members reported him missing Friday. Both the Teller County and the El Paso County Search and Rescue teams began searching with assistance from law enforcement. A photo circulating on social media suggested that Hardy was in the vicinity of Crystal Creek Reservoir or the Crags Trailhead. A gray 2025 Toyota RAV4 that he rented was found at the Crags Trailhead.

A social media post from a purported family member shared the news that Hardy’s body had been found.

“We believe on his descent he was hit with severe thunderstorms and he slipped on snow and suffered a tragic, uncontrollable fall,” states the post.

The Sheriff’s Office public statement says that there were no signs of foul play, and that “this appears to be a tragic outcome of a man confronting the challenges of nature.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been started to assist Hardy’s family in bringing his body home for burial.

More than 100 volunteers from agencies across the Pikes Peak region assisted in the search, “braving varying weather conditions and challenging terrain in the mission,” said Joe Roybal, the El Paso County sheriff.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. Anyone who may have seen Hardy on June 12 is asked to call 719-390-5555. Hardy has been described as 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds. He was last seen in blue jeans, a black T-shirt, and a black L.L. Bean backpack.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will confirm the individual’s identity and determine the cause of death.
