1 arrested in shooting outside Cañon City Walmart

A man is in custody after allegedly firing into a crowd of people Tuesday in a parking lot at a Walmart along U.S. 50 in Cañon City, the police department said.

The Cañon City Police Department responded to call for shots fired around 5:15 p.m. Witnesses told police that occupants of a vehicle were engaged in a verbal dispute, leading to the man pulling out a gun in his car and firing several shots at an unidentified number of people.

No injures were reported.

The man fled in his vehicle, but officers were able to locate and arrest him. Cañon City police identified him as John Elliott, 56, from Florence.

He is being held in the Freemont County jail on charges of first-degree assault, which are subject to change as it’s an ongoing investigation.

Police are asking any witnesses to the event to call Detective Taryn Leonard at 719- 276-7081.
