A 35-year-old man is dead after his kayak capsized Friday on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The man was kayaking with someone else until their crafts capsized going down the river. The man became unconscious after capsizing, and the other kayaker swam to shore.

Parks and Wildlife stated in a Saturday news release that another kayaker followed the man and pulled him to shore above Johnsons Village, south of Buena Vista. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead by the Chaffee County coroner.

According to the agency, the kayakers had appropriate safety equipment, including dry suits, personal flotation devices and helmets.

The agency said the water temperature was 52 degrees, and the river was running at 1,780 cubic feet per second. The weather was 62 degrees, cloudy with scattered showers.

When waters get below 68 degrees, there’s potential for cold water shock that can lead to loss of motor skills, hypothermia or unconsciousness. This is more likely to happen when someone is not wearing a wet suit.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” said Tom Waters, the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area park manager. “This appears to be a tragic accident.”

Before getting out on the Arkansas River, Waters advises to check conditions by calling the recreation area office and to consider using a commercial rafting company if you are unfamiliar with the area or conditions.
