Small hail and a severe thunderstorm warning and a funnel cloud have punctuated another cloudy day in the Pikes Peak region Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a 15-minute severe thunderstorm warning around 2 p.m. warning that a severe thunderstorm was located over southeastern Colorado Springs, moving east at 15 mph. The NWS warned of hail, up to a half-dollar in size was possible.

Both southeastern Colorado Springs and Schriever Space Force Base were included in the warning.

All of El Paso County and much of the southeast quarter of the state, including Douglas, Teller and Pueblo counties, were under a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. today, but the NWS raised that to a tornado warning as of 3:43 p.m. The NWS heightened warning included the threat of hail “up to softball size likely.”

According to Gazette news partner KOAA, a funnel cloud was spotted around 3:30 pm near Powers Boulevard and Bradley Road, south of the Colorado Springs Airport.

The Colorado Springs Airport reported 15 delayed arrivals, and eight delayed departure flights, as of 4:30 p.m.

Even before that warning, reports of light hail had been reported in the city, including pea-sized hail on the Colorado Springs School for the Deaf and Blind, and further east near the South Academy Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue intersection.

Both Colorado Springs and the city’s fire department issued public safety warnings earlier in the day, mentioning the chance of hail, and warning of potential flash flooding today.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department are on scene for two high-angle rescues in Garden of the Gods and Palmer Park. The department reported the weather has played a part and has made the rescues difficult.

The forecast for the weekend looks drier according to KOAA meteorologist Alan Rose. He said that as today’s storms move off to the east, drier air will move in, leading to a drier Saturday.

“Our high on Saturday will warm to near average, topping out at 79 degrees,” said Rose.

However Rose says scattered thunderstorms and cooler temperatures return Sunday as a new cold front arrives.
