A convicted felon on parole was jailed and faces multiple charges after his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run crash and eventual capture in a backyard, according to a news release from the Manitou Springs Police Department.

Police said that shortly after 12:30 p.m. May 12 officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run traffic crash in the 500 block of Manitou Avenue.

James Hummel fled the scene, driving recklessly eastbound on Manitou Avenue, police said. Officers did not pursue him due to the erratic nature of his driving. Hummel then crashed a second time in the 3000 block of West Colorado Avenue and fled on foot, police said.

Manitou officers said they found Hummel hiding in a nearby yard, where he was taken into custody. During the arrest, Hummel is accused of physically assaulting an officer. The officer did not require medical attention.

Police said witnesses reported seeing Hummel in possession of a weapon during the incident. While no weapon was found,  a 9 mm handgun was recovered.

Hummel was booked into the El Paso County jail on multiple felony and traffic charges, including assault on a peace officer. He was still in custody on a probation violation hold as of noon Monday. His next court date is scheduled Thursday.
