Two people was treated for minor injuries and possible smoke inhalation and four apartment units were rendered uninhabitable after a fire in the Greenway Flats apartments south of downtown Colorado Springs.

The 65-unit apartment building, part of the Springs Rescue Mission, was evacuated during the fire response, which was first reported by the Colorado Springs Fire Department on social media platform X around 1 p.m. Friday.

In a video posted by the Fire Department, smoke could be seen coming out of a second-floor unit window.

The fire was declared under control by 1:22 p.m.

“Everyone is safe,” said Cameron Moix, director of communications for Springs Rescue Mission.

Moix said two of the rescue mission’s staffers were briefly treated after they helped evacuate the building. He said the fire was contained to just one unit, and that the majority of the building tenants have been allowed back in, following the fire department’s work.

The four-story apartment building opened up in 2018, and has served as permanent housing for city residents exiting chronic homelessness.

The fire department says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
