Perhaps the most recognizable alligator in American film history has died.

Morris the alligator, who starred in movies including “Happy Gilmore” and “Dr. Dolittle 2,” was estimated to be more than 80 years old at the time of his death, according to post on Facebook from the Colorado Gator Farm, where the scaly giant died.

After a career in Hollywood spanning from 1975 to 2006, Morris retired to Colorado, where he spent his remaining years at the Colorado Gators Reptile Park in Mosca.

While Morris’ true age was unknown, he was nine feet long in 1975, and judging by his growth rate since then and tooth loss, experts have been able to come up with the estimate.

“While we knew this was inevitable, we are very saddened by his passing to old age,” reads a statement from the San Luis Valley area reptile rescue.

In the wild, alligators live about 30 to 50 years, though some in captivity can live more than 70. If Morris was indeed 80, it would have landed him among some of the longest-living alligators ever recorded.

While Colorado might seem like an odd place to send a retired movie star alligator, Colorado Gators Reptile Park has a long history of rescuing and caring for animals.

Alligators were initially introduced to the San Luis Valley in order to help clean up fish waste from a tilapia farm, though as more and more gators were given to the facility over the years, it became a full-blown rescue and education effort. The alligators are able to survive the frigid temperatures of the valley thanks to warm geothermal pools in the area that help to regulate water temperatures year-round.

The reptile rescue and education center is home to hundreds of rescued reptiles, including alligators, crocodiles, caiman, tortoises, and turtles, according to its website. Visitors are are able to pet and hold small alligators.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the Colorado Gator Farm reported that Morris would be taxidermied, “so that he can continue to scare children for years to come.”

“It’s what he would have wanted.”
