Walgreens closing more Colorado Springs locations as woes continue

Three more Walgreens locations in Colorado Springs will close by the end of April.

A store locator on the company’s website shows Walgreens stores at 1920 S. Chelton Road, 350 N. Union Blvd. and 4713 Flintridge Drive will permanently close April 24, April 28 and April 29, respectively. A Walgreens spokesperson on Tuesday morning confirmed the closures.

The closures come after Walgreens shuttered two locations last year in Colorado Springs amid the company’s ongoing financial woes. The suburban Chicago-based pharmacy giant closed its former store at 4305 E. Platte Ave. last April, and in November closed the store at 3143 W. Colorado Ave.

There are at least 22 other Walgreens locations across the Pikes Peak region, including in Monument, Falcon and Fountain in El Paso County and in Woodland Park in Teller County, that will remain open, the store locator shows.

Walgreens said in an email that the store closures in Colorado Springs are part of the company’s plan to close about 1,200 of its roughly 8,500 locations nationwide. The business strategy seeks to improve Walgreens’ bottom line, which has been hurt, in part, because of cost-conscious customers who’ve cut back on spending due to inflation, according to several national news stories.

In early March, Walgreens announced it had agreed to be acquired by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm, in a deal valued at nearly $10 billion.

“We will continue to execute our previously announced turnaround plan aimed at stabilizing the retail pharmacy, including our footprint optimization program,” Walgreens said in a written statement. “Increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing and supply needs. It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance. When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”

Patients who get their prescriptions filled at the Walgreens locations slated for closure this month don’t need to take action, Walgreens said. The company will notify patients by mail, and their prescriptions will be transferred to the following locations:

• 1920 S. Chelton Road prescriptions transferring to 303 S. Circle Drive.

• 350 N. Union Blvd. prescriptions transferring to 920 N. Circle Drive.

• 4713 Flintridge Drive prescriptions transferring to 2785 Dublin Blvd.

Patients at these closing locations can receive free prescription delivery for 90 days to help make the transition easier, Walgreens said. Interested patients can speak with their pharmacist to set up the service.
