Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said he is considering whether to continue using X, formerly known as Twitter, over concerns about “ideology.”
Johnston made the comments on an episode of the City Cast Denver podcast, published Wednesday.
“I’m trying to make that decision,” Johnston said when asked by senior producer Paul Karolyi. “I’ve not been using it recently. Obviously, there’s a lot about it I find very concerning, both in terms of the ideology of it and the use of the platform.”
Mayor Mike Johnston returns to City Cast Denver with host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi, Feb. 26, 2025.
Earlier this week, the Denver City Council said it deleted its X account on Feb. 21, blaming what it described as increased political rhetoric surrounding X’s owner, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency.
“As long as X is owned by Elon Musk, and he’s an appointee of the president, and he’s bidding on contracts for the federal government, as Council President, I have made the decision that we cannot have City Council be part of that,” Sandoval told The Denver Gazette.
On Wednesday’s podcast, Johnston told Karolyi and host Bree Davies that he feels the social media platform has become “particularly destructive,” but that he still wants to make sure information is reaching Denver residents.
“We want to make sure we can get residents information that they need in all those places,” Johnston said. “And so I haven’t made a long-term decision, but right now we’re prioritizing using other platforms.”
At the time of the comments, Johnston hadn’t posted in about two weeks on his personal Twitter account but has since resumed posting. Johnston’s official mayoral account has been posting regularly this month.
