Colorado officials are bracing for the thousands of federal workers who may need help after mass layoffs.

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) announced Tuesday it was prepared to help workers in the state who are laid off – either voluntarily or involuntarily – by President Donald Trump’s initiative to downsize the federal government with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). 

Colorado is home to about 57,000 federal workers, according to CDLE.

The state posted how federal workers can file for unemployment and get access to the state’s reemployment support system.

“Together with the Statewide Workforce System and our Unemployment Insurance Division, we are prepared to help Colorado’s skilled and competent federal workforce navigate any potential period of joblessness,” said CDLE Executive Director Joe Barela in a news release.

The state offers resources and programs for unemployed workers such as coaching, resume development, interview preparation, job fairs, hiring events, workshops and training opportunities through statewide workforce centers.

Colorado itself is hiring workers.

Federal workers are encouraged to explore careers with the State of Colorado and consider the state’s employee benefits: PERA retirement benefits, medical and dental plans, 11 paid holidays per year plus vacation and sick leave, and a variety of work-life programs, such as flexible schedules, training and more.

“The State of Colorado is prepared to support Coloradans impacted by federal job cuts. Colorado’s strong economy is supported by a dedicated state workforce, and I encourage impacted federal workers to join us in building a Colorado For All,” said Gov. Jared Polis said in the release.

The state has about 500 open positions, according to CDLE.

The state’s labor exchange Connecting Colorado also has about 60,000 openings listed.

Laid-off workers eligible for unemployment benefits have to wait one-week before a claim is activated. Workers also can’t file a claim until the last day of work and there are restrictions around workers who continue to accept income, such as a buyout.

Colorado’s labor department also set up a website of resources specifically for affected federal workers at cdle.colorado.gov/unemployment/resources-for-federal-workers.
