News: Colorado native Annaleigh Ashford, recipient of a Tony Award for her portrayal of Essie Carmichael in the 2014 Broadway revival of “You Can’t Take It With You,” returns to her roots June 14 to headline Saturday Night Alive, the signature fundraiser for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
Before taking New York by storm, Ashford, a graduate of Wheat Ridge High School, had starring roles in productions at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center, the former Country Dinner Playhouse and Theatre Group, Boulder Theater and “Lost in the Stars,” a one-night-only concert at the DCPA’s Garner Galleria Theatre.
She currently appears on Broadway in the limited engagement “All In: Comedy About Love.” Before that, she starred opposite Josh Groban in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” earning a Tony nomination. Ashford originated the role of Lauren in “Kinky Boots,” for which she also received a Tony nomination.
She will star opposite Dennis Quaid in “Happy Face,” which premieres March 20 on Paramount+.
Saturday Night Alive, a black-tie gala that raised $23 million for the DCPA’s theater and education programs, will be held in the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex. Following a cocktail reception, guests will repair the Wolf Theatre for Ashford’s performance. The evening continues with dinner and more entertainment in the Seawell Ballroom and concludes with a silent disco after-party.
