DENVER – The Macarena dance after Lilliana Limon’s victory in the 4A girls wrestling finals, that was for her haters.

Limon’s 18-6 major decision victory over Moffatt County’s Kayla Deaton at Ball Arena on Saturday.

That’s for Sierra and the 125-pounder’s coaches.

“My coaches were there when nobody believed in me,” Limon said. “I had people in my club and in my room saying, ‘She doesn’t belong there.’ … It empowers me so much and I’m appreciative of my coaches. They deserve this state title and I’m happy to give it to them.”

Limon is the Stallions’ first individual girls state wrestling champion since it officially became a CHSAA-sanctioned sport. Hailey Ahsmuhs won a title at 147 pounds in 2020 prior to the girls wrestling becoming sanctioned.

The victory over Deaton capped a stellar state run for Limon, who finished the year 33-7.

Limon opened the state wrestling tournament with a tech fall and followed with a pair of pins. But even as the points stacked in the finale, Limon entered the match expecting to win, but she surprised herself.

“She was a hell of a fight, but I didn’t expect to be up that much,” Limon said. “I hit my doubles and they were so solid. They kept working and so I kept hitting them. I watched the score go up and the time go down. I can’t explain how it felt to win by that much.

“(This win) means so much to me and my school means so much to me. I want people to realize how big Sierra is and how far we’ve come … we have kids who aspire to be in the spotlight and I believe we can make those kids’ dreams possible. There’s nothing you can’t do.”
