Southern Colorado bands to hold benefit concert for California wildfire victims

A group of Colorado-based bands will hold a benefit concert to support the victims of the series of wildfires that have ravaged the Los Angeles area.

The concert is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Feb. 15 at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, 21 S. Tejon St. in downtown Colorado Springs, according to a recent news release.

The event is the brainchild of Jason Lee, the front man of the Colorado Springs-based Jason Lee Band. During his time in the Navy, Lee spent a significant amount of time in the San Diego area, so he feels a connection with the people of Southern California, he said.

“What’s happening out there is terrible for everybody involved,” said Lee, a former volunteer firefighter.

“I’d been having conversations with our drummer, Valerie Carricato, about ways that we can help promote local music. Then the fires broke out in California, and we started talking about how we might use our abilities to help the folks out there. This kind of kills two birds with one stone, but our main purpose is to support the relief efforts for the people of Southern California.”

For Meredith Klube, Jack Quinn’s managing partner, the idea of hosting a benefit concert was a “no-brainer,” she said.

“We were on board right away,” Klube said. “We’re such a big firefighter-supportive place, it seemed like a natural fit.”

The Irish pub’s relationship with local firefighters goes back more than 2½ decades, Klube said.

“I was working here in September 1999, around the time of the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Service,” she said. “One night, on maybe a Wednesday, we were just overtaken by bagpipes and firefighters. Since then, they have kind of adopted us as a place they like to hang out and celebrate. We’ve made tons of lifelong friends from that community.”

The concert will be held on Jack Quinn’s upper floor, which is festooned with firefighting memorabilia — donated helmets, jackets, patches and thousands of challenge coins.

“When you walk into Jack Quinn’s, you can immediately see the connection we have with firefighters,” Klube said. “We have so much memorabilia on the second floor, and even on the first floor. It’s really cool to see.”

The benefit concert will be the latest in a series of Colorado support efforts since the California wildfires ignited. Crews from multiple Colorado agencies, including the Colorado Springs Fire Department, have headed west to aid the firefighting efforts there. On Jan. 11, the 302nd Airlift Wing, stationed at Peterson Space Force Base, deployed a C-130H aircraft, equipped with a Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or MAFFS unit, and associated wing personnel, to Channel Islands Air National Guard Station in Port Hueneme, Calif.

“We’ve had some devastating wildfires in Colorado in recent years, so we have that connection with the people of California,” Klube said.

“As Coloradans, we definitely want to show our support for them. I think they would do the same for us.”

In addition to the Jason Lee Band, the concert will feature Randy Stevens and the Groove Maker, the Denver-based group Hopefully Soon, and the father-son alternative band English and Steven, Lee said.

“This is a great opportunity for us, and Jack Quinn’s has been great,” he said.

“Not only did they let us use the venue, but they stepped up and offered to collaborate with us on the donations. It’s wonderful how receptive they’ve been to this idea.”

The concert will be free, with opportunities to donate either on-site or online. All donations will go directly to Red Cross Disaster Relief. Additionally, Jack Quinn’s will donate 15% of the night’s proceeds to the cause.

“Even if we only raise a few hundred dollars, that could be used to help feed or clothe someone who lost everything in the fires,” Lee said. “We’re hoping for more than that, of course, but every little bit helps.”
