Residents woke up Thursday morning to fresh snowfall in the Pikes Peak region, forcing some school and business delays and closures.

Some schools in the region closed for the day include Lewis-Palmer District 38 and Pueblo D-60. Click or tap here for the latest list of closings and delays.

Some schools on a two-hour delay are Fountain-Fort Carson District 8, Harrison District 2, Widefield D-33, Pueblo D-70, Miami-Yoder School District JT-60, James Irwin Charter Schools, Calhan RJ1 and Hanover D-28.

Fort Carson is on a two-hour delay as well as Peterson Space Force Base, Focus on the Family, The Navigators U.S. Headquarters, Security Public Library, Teller County Government, CPCD Head Start, and First Presbyterian Church.

olorado Springs Housing Authority will open at 9 a.m., Colorado State University Pueblo will open at 10 a.m., PPLD Library locations will open at 11 a.m., and IntelliTec College Pueblo will open at 11 a.m.

Forecast

Snow will be heaviest in the mid-to-late morning on Thursday, mellowing out in the afternoon hours, according to Alan Rose, meteorologist with Gazette news partner KOAA.

“It’s nasty out there this morning, with areas of heavy snow and frequent wind gusts of 30-45 mph,” Rose said.

Cameron Simcoe, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, said the Colorado Springs area is seeing snowfall between 2 and 5 inches, with 7 to 9 inches possible along the Palmer Divide in the far north part of El Paso County.

“The heaviest snow already happened in the early morning but we’ll have showers throughout the day tapering off after 12 noon and it’ll be really breezy,” Simcoe said. “But it’ll be dry by evening hours.”

Rose said our high temperatures should warm to about 30 degrees in the late afternoon .

A winter weather advisory is in place for all of El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties through 2 p.m.

Snow plows in Colorado Springs began clearing and treating roadways on primary and secondary routes on a full callout beginning at 3 a.m. Crews changed shifts at noon and kept a full callout in place until midnight when they will reevaluate conditions.

Traffic

The Colorado Springs Police Department as well as Fountain police went into cold reporting Thursday morning due to snowy road conditions, meaning crashes not involving alcohol or injuries can be reported here.

A two-car-crash killing one person in Penrose prompted the closure of northbound lanes of Interstate 115 around 7:00 a.m., according to Colorado State Patrol. Law enforcement is diverting traffic to K Street.

There was a car crash into a light pole impacting Rangewood Drive and Woodland Hills Drive in the north side of the city with unknown blockage reported at 11:00 a.m., according to police. They say there is road work being done westbound on Woodmen west of Rangewood Drive. Lanes have been blocked for icy road conditions.

There was a crash southbound on Interstate 25 south of Baptist Road, blocking the right lane around 9:30 a.m., according to Colorado State Patrol.

A crash northbound on Centennial Boulevard south of Mule Deer Drive created unknown possible blockage around 9:30 a.m., according to police.

There was a crash west of Woodland Park which closed Interstate 24 westbound is closed between Pennsylvania Avenue and Tranquil Acres Road, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

There was a single car roll-over crash at about 8:20 a.m. on Interstate 24 in Cimarron Hills near Constitution Avenue. There were no injuries reported according to Colorado State Patrol.

There was a crash on the westbound MLK Bypass west of Union Boulevard which pushed vehicles into the median at about 9:30 a.m., according to police.

A crash involving multiple vehicles northbound on North Gate Boulevard and Old North Gate Road created unknown blockage at about 11:30 a.m., according to police.

Another crash on Lexington Drive and North Union Boulevard created some unknown blockage, according to police.

There was also a crash on southbound Circle Drive and Hudson Street creating blockage at about 10:30 a.m., according to police.

Tonight

Roads will be icy Thursday night and into Friday morning, according to Rose, but the region will start to see some sun and warming temperatures.

“Friday afternoon will be bright and sunny, with temperatures rebounding into the lower 50s in Colorado Springs, helping to melt away the snow that we’re seeing today,” Rose said.
