14ers
Maddox Dee-Mortensen, sr., Doherty, boys basketball – Dee-Mortensen lit up Pueblo West on Jan. 21 and dropped 21 points on the Cyclones in a 74-51 victory.
The Spartans senior remains on fire on offense for Doherty and scored a season-high 27 points in a 92-57 win against Rampart on Jan. 23.
In his nine games this season, Dee-Mortensen is averaging 18.7 points and is shooting over 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Matthew Lebron, jr., Banning Lewis, boys basketball – Not only did Lebron score 20 or more for a fifth consecutive game, he did so with one of his best nights at the free-throw line.
Lebron scored 27 points in a 70-61 win against St. Mary’s on Jan. 22 and went 11 for 13 from the stripe.
His 11 makes were a season high, and Lebron’s 83 percent mark at the line was his second best of the year.
Aiden Hayler, sr., Discovery Canyon, boys basketball – All but one of Hayler’s points came from beyond the arc in a 67-56 win against Air Academy.
Hayler went 5 of 8 from deep for the Thunder and finished 1 of 2 at the line, while adding four rebounds and four assists.
His 3-point total and 63 percent success rate marked season highs for the senior.
Kelsey Peterson, so., The Classical Academy, girls basketball – Peterson’s 16 points against Mitchell serves as a cliff note compared to the Titan’s defensive performance.
In the 73-11 victory against the Marauders, Peterson finished with 11 steals, which isn’t her season high.
Earlier this season, Peterson swiped the ball 12 times against Elizabeth.
Alyssa Ramos, sr., Doherty, girls basketball – In a 63-37 win against Pueblo West, Ramos stuffed the stat sheet for the Spartans.
Ramos scored a team-high 15 points, knocked down three 3-pointers and finished 2 for 2 at the free throw line.
Ramos also grabbed eight rebounds along with six steals for Doherty in the blowout win.
Deja Burns, jr., Sierra, girls basketball – To the surprise of no one, Burns continues to swat defenders’ shots at a high clip.
Burns finished the Stallions’ contest against Mitchell with six along with 22 points and 16 rebounds.
However, following a 3-for-9 performance at the free-throw line against Pueblo South, Burns redeemed herself with an 8-of-9 shooting night at the stripe.
Noah Austin, sr., Palmer, boys wrestling – Most of Austin’s opponents didn’t make it past the opening minute of their bout.
Austin improved to 33-2 after the 40th Annual Les Mattocks Invitational by earning four wins, all by pin fall, in the event.
The Terrors’ 215-pounder beat three of his four opponents in 65 seconds or less and earned a pin at 3:15 in the finals against teammate Arturo Hernandez.
Wesley Coddington, sr., Vista Ridge, boys wrestling – Coddington earned four wins en route to the title at the 40th Annual Les Mattocks Invitational.
The Wolves’ 175-pounder picked up four pins — three in less than a minute — at the tournament.
In the finals against Denver South’s Richard O’Brien, the No. 2-ranked Coddington pinned O’Brien in the second period.
Joey Meza, sr., Falcon, boys wrestling – The Falcons’ 138-pound state champ dominated in his run at the 2025 Duff Seaney Invite in Cañon City.
Meza improved to 33-5 after earning four wins at the tournament, including a pair of tech falls.
The second of Meza’s two tech falls occurred in the finals against North Fork’s Lane Stroh, who entered the match 33-4. Meza capped his weekend with a 22-6 victory.
Mia Thorne, sr., Pine Creek, girls wrestling – Thorne followed her first-place finish at the annual COS Metro Wrestling Championships with another dominant performance.

Mia Moran, so., Fountain-Fort Carson, girls wrestling – The No. 5-ranked 105-pounder in 5A cruised through her bracket at the Gator Girls tournament at Standley Lake.
Moran finished with five victories — three pins, a tech fall and a major decision win — en route to the title.
Her 11-2 victory in the finals against Rifle’s Anna Gieselman helped Moran improve to 26-11.
Bria Jones, fr., Pine Creek, girls swimming and diving – Jones was the fastest swimmer against Liberty last week.
The Eagles freshman earned first place in the 50 freestyle and the 100 free ahead of the league competition.

Anna Clayton, sr., Discovery Canyon, girls swimming and diving – Clayton picked up a pair of first-place finishes against Lewis-Palmer in their dual last week.
In the 100 backstroke, Clayton finished in 1:06.29 for her third-best time in the event this season.
Clayton’s 27.36 first-place swim in the 50 free marked her best performance of the season in the event.
Wynn Bolte, jr., Liberty, ice hockey – No one in a Rampart jersey could stop the Lancers star in their tilt Jan. 20.
Bolte finished with a hat trick for the Lancers in a 12-2 victory against Rampart. His three goals gave him 13 for the season, and the junior added a pair of assists to give him 12.
Compelling contests
Boys basketball
Rampart 84, Liberty 78
This fast-paced contest saw seven players reach double-figures and three athletes scored 20 or more.
Albeit in a loss, Cameron Cunningham dropped a season-high 37 points for the Lancers on 14-of-25 shooting.
Cunningham also hit three 3-pointers and went 6 of 7 at the free-throw line.
Isaiah Melecio finished with a team-high 24 points for the Rams and recorded five steals.
Lewis-Palmer 44, Palmer Ridge 41
The Battle for Monument went to the Rangers in the boys’ matchup, but not without theatrics toward the game’s finish.
After Palmer Ridge hit a 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 44-41, Lewis-Palmer turned it over on the ensuing inbounds, giving the Bears another opportunity to score.
Palmer Ridge’s Logan Boyer hoisted a 3-pointer, but Lewis-Palmer’s Jonas Miller swatted the shot and recovered it to secure the victory.
Girls basketball
Colorado Springs Christian School 43, Salida 41
The Lions won this matchup despite going scoreless in the first quarter.
Colorado Springs Christian trailed by 10 points at halftime, and, after a late 3-pointer from Salida, trailed 28-27 after the third.
The Lions trailed 34-29 in the fourth quarter, but outscored the Spartans 14-7 down the stretch to run their win streak to eight games. The Lions extended the streak to nine games with a win against Pueblo County last Saturday.
Doherty 48, Rock Canyon 47
The Spartans trailed by seven points entering the fourth quarter against the Jaguars, but Doherty found its defense and started to click on offense to hold off Rock Canyon.
Doherty outscored Rock Canyon 15-6 in the final period and outscored the Jaguars 29-19 in the second half.
Three Spartans scored in double figures, including Kaity Driskell (15), Alyssa Ramos (14) and Payton Cordova (12.)
In case you missed it…
Sierra boys basketball, CJ Jennings earn first win
With a 64-59 victory against Mitchell, the former Stallions basketball player earned his first career win at Sierra’s helm.
The win was Sierra’s first victory in 12 games this season.
Jennings took over the boys program this summer after former coach Terry Dunn retired.
Discovery Canyon loses its 11-game winning streak
Lutheran put a damper on the Thunder’s amazing run and defeated Discovery Canyon 66-56 on Jan. 25.
After a season-opening loss to Pueblo South, the Thunder went on an 11-game win streak, which is the longest in the boys basketball team’s history.
The Thunder’s previous best streak came in 2012-13, when they won eight in a row and finished 17-8.
After the loss to 5A’s No. 3 team, the Thunder dropped to 12-2 and are No. 2 in CHSAA RPI polls.
