Young hero surprised with 911 award just after his 11th birthday

At only 10 years old, Josian Davis saved his grandfather’s life.

On June 26, Davis was visiting his grandparents in the Stratmoor Hills neighborhood on Colorado Springs’ south side when, suddenly, his grandfather Martin fell and struck his head. Martin was bleeding and kept going in and out of consciousness.

Davis quickly and calmly called 911. He was able to provide the address and walk the dispatcher through what exactly happened, updating him on his grandfather’s condition the whole time.

“I was quite scared,” Davis said Friday, standing hand in hand with his grandfather. “He was in really bad condition.”

Despite being scared himself, he comforted his panicked family and reassured Martin that help would be there soon. He even had his family get out their defibrillator in case it was needed, and monitored Martin’s level of consciousness.

The young boy continued to follow instructions provided by the 911 dispatcher as Stratmoor Hills Fire Department and Security Fire rushed to the scene.

Davis’ actions saved his grandfather, who received immediate care and lived to tell the remarkable tale of how his grandson saved his life.

Davis celebrated his 11th birthday Thursday and on Friday, was honored with the 911 Hero Award presented by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

“Josian’s actions during a stressful time were integral to ensuring Martin got the help he needed as quickly as possible,” Chief Scott Deno said.

Alongside the award, he was given the Sheriff’s Coin of Excellence and another coin from the Stratmoor Hills Fire Department, presented by Chief Shawn Bittle. As one last treat, Davis got a ride in a fire engine.

The boy was surprised with the award, as his family did not tell him anything until they arrived for the ceremony. Almost two dozen people showed up to celebrate his actions, including his now-healthy grandfather.

Some of Davis’ family had their own award to give out, presenting the Stratmoor Hills Fire Department with a certificate of appreciation. The family credited the department’s swift response to Martin’s survival.

Dispatcher Gordon Weldon showed up to celebrate Davis, telling The Gazette he distinctly remembers the June call.

“It’s very unusual for us to have young callers, but he knew exactly what to do. Often, we don’t get the end result; we have to rely on feedback from others, and so be able to see the end result, to meet the child, it’s pretty special.”
