Business is blooming at KAE Design Co. in downtown Colorado Springs.

Five years after it launched as a floral design studio, the business has grown into a multi-concept outfit that now includes custom floral arrangements and fashion. On Saturday, KAE Design Co. will formally launch its newest arm, a boutique selling high-end, affordable women’s clothing and accessories, handcrafted candles made in-house, and other gifts.

Brianna Gordon, owner of the multi-concept florist, boutique and event studio KAE Design Co., fixes a dress on display at her downtown Colorado Springs store. KAE Design Co. is hosting a grand reopening on Saturday, Jan. 25, to officially launch its new retail boutique concept selling affordable, high-end women’s fashions, handmade candles and other gifts.

Owner Brianna Gordon said she wanted to bring more retail options offered by independently owned businesses to downtown Colorado Springs, which in recent years has seen an influx of apartment construction and other commercial developments that aim to attract more people to live and shop in the area.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Gordon, a Seattle native who moved with her husband to Colorado nearly 10 years ago.

Gordon’s new boutique will fill a gap she identified in the local retail industry for higher-end women’s clothing that is still affordable, she said.

The company also brings to Colorado Springs some of the West Coast flavor Gordon grew up with, evident in her floral designs and the style of clothing and accessories she sells.

“A lot of it is really inspired by the coast,” Gordon said.

Gordon launched her floral design business in late 2019, out of desire for a more flexible career as she and her husband, Justin, awaited the arrival of their daughter Claire. Gordon had been working in strategic planning for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee.

As she was getting her new company off the ground, the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, temporarily closing some businesses and stymying the usual operations of others. Gordon, who had been taking orders for custom floral arrangements out of her home in Teller County, found herself hand-delivering the arrangements to her customers.

KAE Design Co. offers a flesh flower bar. Customers can build their own arrangements in store, make their own bouquets or purchase an arrangement. KAE Design Co. too offers floral workshops, offers floral arrangements for corporate events and weddings, and now sells women’s fashions and accessories as part of its recently launched boutique concept.

She’s grown the business nearly every year since, expanding KAE Design Co.’s offerings. Gordon soon realized many people were ordering her flowers for weddings and other events — and most of her customers were doing the event planning all by themselves. She saw the opportunity to launch a wedding and event planning arm of her business, which she officially did in 2024.

The year before, she began operating the business out of its current space in downtown Colorado Springs, 120 Pueblo Ave. The company has participated in more than 250 events and floral orders have grown every year, she said. On Saturday, the boutique concept formally launches.

“I really want people to come into the store and see who we are, what we offer. There is beauty and joy happening here!” Gordon said.

Her store sells classic and contemporary styles of women’s clothing to serve a wide age range, from everyday casual pieces like blouses, cardigans and sweaters to dressier evening wear, plus a collection of everyday jewelry and accessories like silk and botanical-dyed scarves.

Visitors can pick up novelty items like books, apothecary items, stationery and more, plus they can take home fresh flowers from the flower bar, build their own arrangement or bouquet in store, or hire KAE Designs for weddings and events.

Gordon also offers floral workshops and the store’s garden space is available for rent for private events.
