26-year-old woman identified in fatal train-car collision in Security-Widefield
The woman who died after being flung from her car after colliding with a moving train in Security-Widefield has been identified.
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified her Wednesday morning as 26-year-old Nayvis Socarras Diaz.
Diaz was a Colorado Springs resident according to public records.
Officers with the Colorado State Patrol responded Monday at 3:29 p.m. to Main Street Crossing located at the Highway 85 and Main Street interchange to find Diaz, deceased, having been ejected from a Mitsubishi Outlander, according to Trooper Sherri Mendez.
After investigating, troopers determined the vehicle was traveling westbound on Main Street towards an active train crossing and did not stop when all other traffic was stopped at the posted flashing downed arms.
The CSP said Tuesday that the vehicle ran through the arms and struck the train cars traveling northbound. The car then rotated, the driver was ejected from the vehicle. Based on photographs from the scene, it appears the car was pushed by the collision onto the northeast side of Main Street.
State patrol says no one else was in the vehicle or injured in the crash.
The word from bystanders is that the train did not stop following the collision.
No charges have been issued as of Tuesday morning and the investigation is still ongoing.
