Extreme cold watch expected Monday night in Colorado Springs: National Weather Service

Frigid temperatures are expected to persist in Colorado Springs through Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with subzero overnight lows on Sunday and Monday, but the region should get a respite beginning on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Parts of the city will likely see snow showers late Sunday to early Monday, the weather agency predicts. Overnight, temperatures should reach a low of minus 5 degrees, with wind chill values between minus 10 and minus 20.

Monday will bring a 50% chance of snow showers and a high of 4 degrees, NWS said. An extreme cold watch is expected to go in effect Monday night, with an overnight low of minus 12.

“The coldest air will hit us Monday night, probably into early Tuesday morning,” said NWS meteorologist Mike Garberoglio. “Things should actually start rebounding pretty quick after that.”

Tuesday is expected to bring some welcome sunshine and a high near 39 degrees, according to the weather agency.

“We’ll have another brief cooldown this weekend, but not nearly as cold as we have been,” Garberoglio said.

Here is the rest of the week’s forecast from the National Weather Service:

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Northwest wind 10-15 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 35 degrees. Northwest wind around 10 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. West southwest wind about 10 mph.
