A Colorado State Patrol trooper was involved in a crash on Colorado Springs’ east side Sunday evening, according to a news release from the department. 

At 4:48 p.m., a state patrol vehicle was involved in a crash with a Toyota Prius at the intersection of Highway 24 at Marksheffel Road, forcing part of the highway to close.

According to the department, the patrol vehicle was transporting a party in custody who had been arrested on a warrant from a previous traffic stop.

Officials said the trooper was transported to a hospital “as a precautionary” and the party in custody was transported in an ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The Prius had one occupant, the driver, who refused to be transported to a hospital, according to the state patrol. 

Westbound Highway 24 is closed at Newt Drive, while eastbound remains open.

Officials said the crash remains an active investigation and all possible causes are under investigation. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s major crash team is investigating the crash, according to the state patrol.
