Gazette Preps weekly rewind: Top performers and events from the past week
The post-winter break slate delivered several highlights and memorable contests from Pikes Peak region athletes.
Here’s a recap of some of the events from the past week.
14ers
Elijah Mack, sr., Doherty, boys basketball — Mack continues to pace the Spartans on offense and scored 47 points in two games last week.
Mack poured in a game-high 32 in a loss to rival Palmer and had five steals. It’s the fourth game this season where Mack has finished with five or more steals.
JJ Wetters, sr., Vanguard, boys basketball — In the Coursers’ matchup with Ellicott on Jan. 8, Wetters had a career night.
The senior finished with a career-high 28 points in a 105-41 win against the Thunderhawks. Wetters also hit a career-best 10 field goals.
Ky Walker, sr., The Classical Academy, boys basketball — Through nine games, the senior has been spectacular. Walker scored 26 on 9-of-14 shooting in a 59-32 victory against Coronado on Jan. 8 to help the Titans remain undefeated.
Walker is 51 of 82 from the field and shoots 62 percent overall, including a 7-of-7 shooting performance in a 60-50 win against Colorado Springs Christian on Dec. 7.
Brooklyn Stewart, sr., Pine Creek, girls basketball — The Oklahoma commit has scored 201 points in 10 games this season and had a stellar showing against Denver East.
In the Eagles’ 62-58 victory against the Angels, Stewart finished with 27 points and shot 7-for-7 at the free-throw line.
Stewart has scored double digits in all 10 games, extending her streak of 10 points or more to 69 consecutive games overall. The senior last failed to reach double figures on Dec. 10, 2021, when she finished with 8 in a 42-34 loss to Cherry Creek.
Rose Ross, soph., Colorado Springs Christian, girls basketball — As a freshman, Ross averaged 9.9 points for the Lions. Through seven games this season, nine is the fewest Ross has scored. Her 20 points per game is second in 3A, and the sophomore poured in 50 in two games last week.
In a 78-17 win against James Irwin on Jan. 10, Ross nearly notched a triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds and 11 steals.
Jordyn Christensen, sr., Vanguard, girls basketball — In a 52-16 win against Banning Lewis, Christensen stuffed the stat sheet.
Christensen finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals, all game highs. The Coursers senior has three games this season with 10-plus points and three or more steals.
Tristan Pino, fr., Sand Creek, boys wrestling — In four matches at the Pueblo Centennial Invite, Pino showcased why he remains undefeated.
Pino opened the tournament with a pair of technical fall victories and then won two decisions.
The Sand Creek 106-pounder, who’s No. 1 in the weight class, earned a 4-2 decision win against Pueblo East’s Alex Herburger, who ranks No. 3. Pino’s win gave him a 26-0 record.
David Burchett, jr., Falcon, boys wrestling — Falcon’s No. 1 165-pounder wrestled remarkably at the Rodriguez Tournament of Champions at Eaglecrest High School.
Burchett finished with a pair of pins, a major decision victory and two decision wins, including a 10-3 decision victory against Brighton’s Ollin Quintana in the final.
The five wins improved Burchett’s record to 31-2 this season.
Jack Doughty, sr., Cañon City, boys wrestling — The top-ranked 190-pounder kept his record unblemished after earning five pins at the Gunnison Cowboy Invite.
Doughty earned four of his five pin-fall victories in the first period and improved to 23-0.
Amayah Hinojosa, jr., Widefield, girls wrestling — At the Lamar Lady Thunder Invite, Hinojosa moved from 120 pounds to 125. The results remained the same.
Hinojosa pinned three of her four opponents in less than 40 seconds en route to the final. Once there, Hinojosa pinned Sierra’s previously unbeaten Lilliana Limon, the No. 1 125-pounder, in 71 seconds. Hinojosa improved to 23-1.
Piper Montoya, jr., Cañon City, girls wrestling — Montoya competed in two matches at the Gunnison Cowboy Invitational Girls tournament and spent less than 3 minutes on the mat.
Montoya improved to 10-0 with a pair of pins, including against Gunnison’s Isabelle Crown in the final in 1:51.
Samantha Synsvoll, sr., Cheyenne Mountain, girls swimming — During the 38th Annual Girls Hornet Invitational at Pueblo County, the Red-Tailed Hawk cruised past her competition to help Cheyenne Mountain win the meet.
Synsvoll won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 52.52 seconds, more than 13 seconds faster than second place.
In the 100 fly, Synsvoll was the lone competitor to swim a sub-60 and placed first in the final at 57.95.
Abigail Perry, sr., Lewis-Palmer, girls swimming — No one stood a chance against Perry in the pool at the Girls Hornet Invitational.
Perry clocked in at 2:06.78 to win the 200 IM, nearly 11 seconds faster than second place. In the 500 freestyle, Perry swam nearly 30 seconds quicker than second place and registered a time of 4:58.66.
Chase Vaughn, jr., Lewis-Palmer, ice hockey — The Rangers junior remains a force between the pipes.
Vaughn had a season-best 47 saves in a 3-2 loss to Heritage on Jan. 11 to bring his total to 225 this season.
That is sixth-most in Colorado and 42nd in the nation. Vaughn’s 2.1 goals-against average ranks 15th nationally.

Boys basketball
Rampart 56, Palmer 54
The Rams earned their second two-point road win of the season and outscored the Terrors by just one point (32 to 31) in the second half.
Theodore Wilson scored a team-high 15 points for Rampart and Elias Bishop poured in 14 on 5-of-7 shooting for the Rams.
For the Terrors, J’twane Mike had a game-high 21, which was his fifth 20-point game of the season.
Vanguard 70, Banning Lewis 67
In a rematch of last year’s 3A Final Four contest, the Coursers again defeated the Stallions.
Junior Matty Dessalegn and freshman Isaiah Bregard each scored 18 for Vanguard, and both hit seven field goals.
Banning Lewis outscored Vanguard 37-35 in the second half, and Matthew Lebron scored a game-high 21 for the Stallions.
Girls basketball
Ellicott 55, Vanguard 54
The Thunderhawks kept their win streak intact with the home victory.
Kassiah Ducworth scored 19 points to help Ellicott improve to 6-1. Ducworth also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double and tallied six blocks.
Jordyn Christensen and Joy Johncock each had 20 for the Coursers and combined for 19 of Vanguard’s 35 rebounds.
ICYMI…
Jasmine Byers nets 1,000th career point
Albeit in a 55-52 loss to George Washington, the Vista Ridge senior reached 1,000 points for her career last Friday night.
Byers dropped 25 points on George Washington to reach 1,004 points for her career and continues to dazzle on both ends of the floor.
The Wolves (6-2) have averaged 57.1 points per game. Byers has led the way at 20.8 points per game, which is 19th in Colorado.
Wetters’ earns win 200
Vanguard eked out a 70-67 victory against Banning Lewis on the road Friday night to improve to 6-2. The win gave coach Joe Wetters his 200th career victory.
Since the 2015-16 season, Wetters has finished over .500 in seven of the past nine seasons. The team earned the No. 3 seed in last year’s 3A playoffs and finished as runners-up in the title game.
Cheyenne Mountain boys basketball off to a hot start
In the previous two seasons, the Red-Tailed Hawks have combined to win nine games. Through 10 games this year, Cheyenne Mountain is 9-1.
The Red-Tailed Hawks last earned nine or more wins in a year in 2019-20, when they finished 21-3 and earned the No. 8 seed in the 4A playoffs.
Sophomore Alex Treglia leads the Red-Tailed Hawks in scoring with 16.2 points per game and senior Cayden Cooper is second with 14.2 ppg.
In eight of their nine wins this year, the Red-Tailed Hawks have beaten their opponents by double figures.
