The father of the man who shot a 9-year-old girl during a neighborhood dispute was sentenced to prison last week after pleading guilty to accessory to a crime.

Ruben Segovia II, 23, and Ruben Segovia-Diaz, 47, are the two men involved in the shooting that wounded an autistic girl last January.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Gazette, Segovia II and Segovia-Diaz, in the middle of the day on Jan. 18, 2024, shot at the girl’s home because of a dispute between neighbors that happened 20 minutes prior. The affidavit states that one of the four shots discharged at the house struck and wounded the girl, who was inside, in the stomach. She survived.

According to the affidavit Segovia-Diaz was also believed to have been in a gang.

Segovia II last appeared in court in November and was sentenced to 31 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder.

Initially, Segovia-Diaz pleaded not guilty to all charges. Court records show that shortly after Segovia II’s sentencing hearing his father pleaded guilty to one count of accessory to a crime charged with a class one or two felony.

Court records show that on Jan. 3 Segovia-Diaz was sentenced to six years in the Department of Corrections by Judge David Shakes, who also sentenced Segovia-Diaz’s son in November.
