Homicide cases filed Thursday against pair connected to Colorado missing persons investigation

Double homicide cases moved to El Paso County, court records reveal detailed timeline

New homicide charges have been filed against a man and woman who went missing from Colorado, having been linked to one dead body and the suspicious disappearance of another man.

Public records reveal homicide cases have been filed against Johnny Rankin Morris and Hailey Cole, who are connected to the missing person case and a death.

Morris’ case is in El Paso County while Cole’s is in Park County.

Morris also has an open homicide case that was filed on Jan. 31, 2024 in El Paso County in which he is listed as a defendant, according to court records. Law enforcement has yet to arrest Morris on charges related to the open case. The arrest affidavit in the 2024 case is sealed.

On Monday, law enforcement in Picayune, Miss., the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office and the Picayune Police Department, found and arrested the pair after a call came in about an attempted car break-in.

At the time of writing, both remain in custody at the Pearl River County jail and each face a $5 million bond to be released from custody.

Morris and Cole faced new charges upon their arrest for both commercial and attempted residential burglary after law enforcement said they were camping in someone’s shed.

According to prior Gazette reporting, both had outstanding Mississippi warrants from the Mississippi Department of Corrections for failure to appear, as well as other county-level charges of receiving stolen property and contempt of court-failure to appear.

A third person, Stephen Walker, 37, who went missing from El Paso County at the same time as Morris on Dec. 19, remains missing.

He is described as 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds and has black hair, brown eyes and tattoos on his right arm. His family has asked through social media for anyone with any information about his whereabouts or well-being to contact authorities.

Police initially filed missing persons reports for Morris and Walker after deputies found large quantities of blood throughout a house associated with the pair. The residence is in the 1800 block of Pima Drive in Cimarron Hills.

The case became a death investigation days later on Dec. 24 when a “check the welfare” call resulted in the discovery of 65-year-old Timmy L. Huston, who was dead upon officer arrival. Public records indicated that Cole and Huston were listed as residents of the same residence.

It was not initially clear whether the new homicide charges related to the death of Huston or the potential death of Walker.
